Front axle shafts come in two varieties independent front suspension (IFS) and solid axle. Solid Axle is considered generally stronger and more capable when rock crawling, IFS is gaining ground and is a lot better when going fast. Independent Front has two design the more popular A-arm design and Twin Traction Beam. The twin traction beam was popular in the 80's and 90's mostly on the Ford trucks. A-arm 4wheel drive has taken a huge leap due to Ultra 4 racing and is now being made to be quite strong. The front inner axle seal is the seal for the front axle it is typically located under the differential cover next to the carrier. This seal keeps the dirt out and oil in the differential.
