Front axle shafts come in two varieties independent front suspension (IFS) and solid axle. Solid Axle is considered generally stronger and more capable when rock crawling, IFS is gaining ground and is a lot better when going fast. Solid axles are what you still find in most of your 1 ton pickups. With great big housings like Dana 60 and 70 being the most popular. Independent Front has two design the more popular A-arm design and Twin Traction Beam. The twin traction beam was popular in the 80's and 90's mostly on the Ford trucks. Even though the TTB was discontinued by Ford it is still popular with the desert racing crowd. The A-arm design is more popular because they have been in passenger cars for a very long time. A-arm 4wheel drive has taken a huge leap due to Ultra 4 racing and is now being made to be quite strong.
