When you change gear ratios you will most likely need to replace the bearings as well. Each model of axle is slightly different as to how you set them up. Dana model axles don't have a removable third member like a Ford 9" or Toyota axle which can make replacement quicker. All axles have a pinion gear that has an inner and outer bearing that support the pinion and keep it moving smooth. Some axles have a third bearing called a pinion support bearing that prevents it walking away from the ring gear under heavy load. The carrier has two bearings to support it as well these are located on the left and right side of the carrier. Inside the carrier is the spider gears, limited slip clutches and components or locking gears if you have a locker. Depending on how long and what kind of maintenance your diff has gone through and what you are doing you may get away with just a pinion gear kit or you may need a a master install kit to replace everything. For the guys that have done thousands of the differentials we have bearing only kits that don't come with shims and for the guys that are on a budget we have shim kits to reuse all the bearings you currently have.
